I was inspired by the last song we sang in church on Sunday, “God of Grace and God of Glory”, which contains the phrase: “Grant us wisdom, Grant us courage, For the facing of this hour.”
That seems like a plea, a prayer to God, for the two things we must increase in order to deal with these times that we live in.
“Grant us wisdom…”
“For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” [Proverbs 2:6]
“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” [James 1:5]
“Grant us courage…”
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” [Joshua 1:9]
“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.” [II Timothy 1:7]
“For the facing of this hour…”
“Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.” [I John 2:18]
“Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth.” [Revelation 3:10]
This hymn was written 94 years ago, and the writer certainly knew which two attributes would be required to endure this time. Perhaps we should start out at least some of our prayers with: “Dear Father, please give me more wisdom and courage to face this hour.”
