Major or minor?

Happy Friday, everyone–

When Pastor Smith said that he was going to do a sermon series on the minor prophets, it inspired me to share a few nuggets illustrating the accuracy of their prophecies:

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from old, from ancient times.” [Micah 5:2]

“After Jesus was born in Bethlehem…” [Matthew 2:1a]

“Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!  Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”[Zechariah 9:9]

“They (the disciples) brought the donkey and the colt, placed their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them.” [Matthew 21:7]

“I told them, ‘If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it,’ So they paid me thirty pieces of silver. [Zechariah 11:12]

“Then one of the Twelve – the one called Judas Iscariot – went to the chief priests and asked, ‘What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?’  So they counted out for him thirty silver coins.” [Matthew 26:14-15]

This is just a sampling of the fulfilment of prophecies from the minor prophets, which comprise the last twelve books of the Old Testament. As Pastor Smith pointed out, these books are only called ‘minor’ because of their length, not the importance of their message.

Major prophets?  Minor prophets?  All I see is prophets who have been given messages from God and have dutifully passed them on to not only their people, but to us. In whatever way God passes on messages and warnings to us, would we not do well to heed them?
